Tremasi Grenache

2022
Tremasi Grenache

This striking, dark garnet offers a punchy nose of dark fruits, brisket, bay leaf, and cardamom. The palate is a delightful chorus of huckleberry, seaweed, sage, and crème de violette. Surprisingly structured for a thin-skinned varietal, it shows present tannins upfront that glide seamlessly into a refreshing, quenching finish of cherry skin and incense.

Vintage Notes

Grenache has long captivated wine lovers with its perfume, lift, and textural allure. Rooted in the south of France in places like the Southern Rhône and Provence, it anchors classics such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, and Vacqueyras. In the United States, plantings were sparse for decades, appearing in select pockets of California where a few pioneers revealed its red-fruited elegance, spice, and graceful texture. In the right hands, Grenache brings silk, brightness, and savory detail that feels timeless.

On Red Mountain, plantings remain limited but increasingly focused. Southwest exposures, steady winds, and well-drained, loess-based soils over sand and gravel encourage even ripening, while dramatic day-to-night temperature swings preserve lift and fine tannin. These conditions reward careful farming and gentle extraction, yielding wines with red fruit purity, white-pepper spice, and a mineral finish. We are fortunate to work with thoughtfully chosen parcels on Red Mountain to let this place speak clearly in the glass.

The 2022 Single Barrel Tremasi Grenache was crafted from a single vineyard block within this iconic AVA.

The winemaking team worked with the Tremasi vineyard crew to restrict yields, creating small, concentrated berries. Thoughtful canopy management and precise irrigation strategies were implemented. Cool fall nights preserved freshness while flavor continued to develop. The fruit was hand harvested in the early mornings throughout October.

At the winery, the fruit was hand sorted, with 80% destemmed and berry sorted, then layered over 20% whole-cluster fruit. The wine spent more than 30 days in tank for extended maceration before being barreled into 100% French oak (60% new). It was cellared for 20 months, and four barrels were selected and blended. Bottled unfined and unfiltered to ensure purity and vibrancy, only 95 cases produced.

The final wine is 100% Grenache from clones 2 and 515.
